A classmate says it best and with few words. I wish to let all generations that have shared a part of your life with us by being a part of the Athens High School extended family read what Don Pierce wrote just the other day. His words ring with a truth and I think express the feelings of the Class of 1953 quite eloquently. Thank you Don for these words:
“When I think of our class and U.S. History, I sometimes say we were born in the Depression, too young for World War Two, too young for the Korean War (except Peezell), most were too old for the Vietnam War and too old for the sexual and drug revolutions of the 60's and 70's (except
for any of you who want to confess otherwise). I recently read a description of those who came of age in the "50's as being the last "Polite Generation". When you think about it, the "50's” were indeed
mellow years when compared to the last five decades. Maybe that is why a lot of us have problems adjusting to modernity.” |
